The Africentric Heritage park opened in 2000 and bears the inscription “to our children." It was created to commemorate the past, focus on the present and provide a foundation for the cultural future of African Nova Scotians. The Park is situated on Vale Road in the South end of New Glasgow. At the heart of the park is a pyramid-shaped building, which symbolizes the pyramids of Egypt. Each side of the building represents a portion of the history and migration story of the Black community in Nova Scotia. |

Arisaig Provincial Park offers a 1.6 km loop along the shore. Starting at the interpretation centre, the winding trail travels towards the shore through a white spruce forest. You can stop to take pictures and admire the ocean and Arisaig Brook at observation platforms along the trial. This is a great place to watch the sun set. From the brook, you climb a steep, short hill to and open field which leads back to the centre. An interpretation centre had fossil panels, and fossils can be found in the occasional beach rock or in the sandstone and siltstone cliffs. The Beach walk is breathtaking. Also at the park are unsupervised beaches, outhouses, picnic tables and parking. There are water taps next to the outhouses. Although the park is only open from May to October, people are still allowed to visit the area during other times of the year. Arisaig Provincial Park overlooking the warm waters of the Northumberland Strait offers a fascinating window to life on Earth some 443 to 417 million years ago. One of North America’s most continuously exposed sections of Silurian rock, representing 4 million years of earth history, is found here. These sedimentary rocks are rich in fossils and features that have helped geologists interpret the ancient environment of this area. |

Managed by the non-profit Barrington Leisure Park Association (BLPA), the park features a 100-by-50-foot cement pad for basketball and a multi-use trail. It is accessible for all genders and abilities, with future expansion phases targeting a splash pad and a skateboard park. |

The 6-km trail system offers everything from leisurely paved walkways to fairly challenging unpaved hills – great for cross country skiing, snow-shoeing, wildlife observation or long hikes or quiet walks in the woods. Park amenities include parking, picnic areas, fresh water taps, vault toilets, rest areas with benches and an interpretive centre with details of the park, its hiking trails and the area’s natural history. |

Big Island Beach is a beautiful, peaceful beach that runs for kilometer's and includes both sandy and rocky parts. It's a lovely and relaxing spot. Sand bars with shallow water are ideal for frisbee or catch during low tide. Because the sun sets over the water, you can stay at the beach until late in the afternoon. One of the best in Pictou County! Poison ivy can be found in abundance along Big Island Road, especially around the beach entrances. On-site restrooms and trash cans are not available. Please dispose of your garbage in a proper manner elsewhere. |

"Bissell Park" is a small central park located in the Village of River John. Anna Bissell, a River John native, was a successful businesswoman in an era when manufacturing was considered a man's domain. She married Melville Bissell at the age of 19 and became a partner in their crockery and China business. Anna became a travelling salesperson after he invented the carpet sweeper in 1876. In 2019, the River John Community Action Society led the installation of floating docks at the park, making it easier and safer for kayakers, canoeists, and small boat users to access the water. |

Breakwater Beach is well protected by Port Hood Island and a rock breakwater. Water temperatures vary between 22 and 24 degrees C. The water is very shallow in places due to sandbars, allowing the water to heat up early in the season and stay warm. Lifeguard service provided July and August. |

A sand and stone protected beach. This is not a great launch site as it is exposed to the prevaling west wind. However on a calm day, it makes for a remote paddle along a wild coast. There is also a large lagoon behind it. Limited Parking. Do not drive on the soft sand as you may get stuck and it damages the dune grass. |

Carmichael Park is a beautiful riverside park in the heart of downtown New Glasgow with large mature trees, a covered gazebo, and a number of monuments.
This park is the location for the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies on November 11th. The Gazebo was built by the Royal Canadian Legion, Normandy Branch #34. Also located in the park is an obelisk, erected in memory of the Pictou Highlanders who died and in honor of those who served.

This gorgeous, clean beach is cradled in a cove, and offers safe swimming with long shallow water areas and great views. This is the choice of local folks not only because of its sheer size, but also its privacy from the road. It also offers a clean, shallow, fresh water stream which crosses the beach and empties into the Gulf; kids love playing in and around it. There’s rocky point to be explored, even in bare feet; the path has been worn smooth by generations of curious traffic. How to get here: Cape Bretoners travel from Baddeck and Sydney to enjoy Chimney Corner’s perfection. The gravel road to the beach is located on the right, at the bottom of a dip (you’ll also see ablue bungalow on the corner, about 8 km. south of Margaree Harbour, just a little south of the Cape Breton Clay shop and pond). At the end of the road, there’s plenty of parking in a grassy lot beside the beach. |
