He was a community leader and, because he had a fairly good education, he was chosen as clerk of the proprietors. He also served as magistrate and surveyor. A religious man, he conducted services when there was no pastor. He has been described as a good and patient man. His contribution to the community makes him worthy of the recognition that has been given. Almost everyone on Cape Sable Island can trace their ancestry to Archelaus and his wife, Elizabeth. He could justifiably be called "The Father of Cape Sable Island". The museum building, located not far from where "Squire Arch" had his home, was orginally used by the Sons of Temperance and Knights of the Macabees for their meetings. Later it became the Centreville Community Hall. In 1970 it was purchased by the newly organized Archelaus Smith Historical Society. Devoted mainly to items connected with the fishing industry, the museum has grown to include artifacts from almost every aspect of island life. Shelburne County	Baccaro Point Look-Off and Lighthouse	Destination	Perched at the edge of the ocean, this lighthouse is an important seabird watching site. Located on the east side of Barrington Bay near Port La Tour, this small wooden lighthouse was built in 1934. It replaced the original building, built in 1850, which was destroyed by fire. Baccaro is the oldest place name in Nova Scotia. It comes from the Basque word, Baccolaos, cod-fish. Baccaro point is the most southerly point of mainland Nova Scotia. (Cape Sable, off Cape Sable Island is the furthest south.) In 1852 the materials for the first lighthouse were hauled along the beach – there being no road. Today the tall (45 feet), square tapered building stands fast on its bed of solid rock. Accessible on land. Shelburne County	Barrington Municipal Pool	Destination	This facility is 82 feet long and 28 feet wide. The shallow end (20 x 28 feet) is only 2 1/2 feet deep. The pool then slopes down to a depth of 5 1/2 feet over the next 20 feet. The deep end (42 x 28 feet) is 5 1/2 feet deep. The pool is heated and a comfortable temperature will be maintained. Due to the depth of the pool, diving will not be taught or allowed. A complete schedule of instruction using the Life Saving Society swimming program will be offered. Shelburne County	Barrington Woolen Mill	Destination	Established in 1882, this turbine-driven woolen mill changed the way local fishing and farming families made the yarn and cloth they needed to produce warm, wool clothing. Before the introduction of the mill and its machines, turning raw fleece sheared from sheep into wool products had to be done at home and by hand; a chore that could consume countless hours. The mill gave residents a new, faster way to process fleece and, additionally, contributed to the community by broadening the local economy and providing job opportunities. Peak production at the mill took place from 1900 to 1910 and also during World War II (1939 to 1945), when the demand for wool products increased. By 1962, the mill ceased production and, as one of the last small mills from the 1800s, was adopted into the Nova Scotia Museum system in 1968. For 110 years, 16 principal lightkeepers and their families kept the light burning on this small, windswept island. The longest-serving keeper was Morrill Richardson, who along with his wife Evelyn, bought the island (except for the lighthouse property) in 1929. In 1945, Evelyn Richardson’s classic book We Keep A Light was published and quickly became a best-seller in Canada. She described her family’s life on the island with sensitivity and humour, noting both the disadvantages and joys of life on an isolated island. Pictou County	Cape to Cape Trail, Dalhousie Mountain Trail	Destination	For the first few kilometres, the route follows the Old Dalhousie Mountain Road, which is shaded by trees, from the Glen Road access point. The woods thin out near the summit of the mountain, allowing for stunning vistas. The trail crosses with a service road that is part of the Dalhousie Mountain Wind Farm towards the top of the mountain, leading you past Wind Generator #43 on the bank to your left. The route crosses with the Old Dalhousie Road after about 200 metres on the service road, leading to the Willis Cemetery and Millsville. Chapel Hill has been a museum since 1980. Come and learn more about Gilbert Nickerson, “The Old Chairmaker,” who made the wreckwood chair from pieces of wood retrieved from various shipwrecks, including the legendary Titanic! Gilbert is only one part of our interesting shipwreck display. Another famous local is Evelyn Richardson, Governor General Award-winning author of We Keep a Light. Come see pictures and learn more about life on Bon Portage Island. We also have several of her books for sale. Another island of interest is Stoddart’s Island, the site of a murder and a potential nuclear power plant. This is one display certainly worth reading. Finish your tour with a climb up the old bell tower steps to our Sea Tower and gaze out the windows at the breathtaking panoramic view of Shag Harbour. There are three lighthouses visible from the tower and they are Bon Portage, West Head and Cape Light. It was a white, square, pyramidal wooden tower with a red lantern, with a dwelling attached. Both were demolished in 1967 and replaced with a conical fibreglass tower. Accessible on land. To reach us, simply take a detour from the 103 onto Upper Clyde Road in Clyde River. After following the meandering river for about 10 kilometers on a paved road, you’ll notice the picturesque Clyde River on your right and just a few steps away, the Clyde Farm Campground will be on your left. There is a boat launch directly across from the campground and we offer access via a pathway that leads directly to Pug Lake, a clear water gem of a lake. The river, on the right, like the tree-lined, country road, twists and turns at every bend. In the fall, the hardwood trees along the riverbank are a burst of colour. There are seven one and two bedroom cottages nestled among the hardwood trees (four two-bedroom and three one-bedroom), each on their own lot for added privacy, and given a name corresponding to the type of trees nearby - Birch Cottage, Maple Cottage, Pine Cottage, etc. Each 'full housekeeping cottage' is meticulously clean and has everything you need for a family vacation including bedding, towels, pots and pans, dishes, dish detergent, salt, pepper, sugar, cutlery, coffeemaker and even coffee and tea (provided FREE to our guests) for one night. Each cottage is fully insulated and electrically heated and comes complete with modern appliances (including microwave, full stove and fridge), satellite TV, clock radio, blow-dryers, games, books, an outdoor fireplace, picnic tables, (you can buy firewood & rent BBQ’s at the store). The campground is open from May 15th to September 30th. A laundry room is on site. As of 2023, we now have free high-speed internet (WIFI) for all guests! In the office there’s access to the internet, phone or fax. Two bedroom cottages sleep up to six and one bedroom cottages sleep up to four guests comfortably. Double, queen and twin beds available. We have 73 campsites with full hookups or unserviced sites, wooded, opened and well spaced. We now also have 2-30 Amp pull through sites. Our customers suggest our new facility is one of the best campgrounds and camping destinations in the province and one of the great places to stay in Nova Scotia. We require a minimum of 4 nights stay for camping. Inverness County	Fishing Cove Campground	Destination	The Fishing Cove back-country camping area is an 8 km (5 mi) hike down to the rugged coastline cradled at the base of MacKenzie Mountain. A grassy hillside, a cobblestone beach and a river complement this camping spot. Campers are required to register for a back-country permit at either the Chéticamp or Ingonish Visitor Centres, bring a camp stove (no open fires allowed), pack out all garbage (no garbage receptacles) and bring their own drinking water. Potable water is not available on site. A 4 km (2.5 mi) return trail is also available. Shelburne County	Fort St. Louis	Destination	Fort St. Louis National Historic Site of Canada is situated one kilometre southeast of Port La Tour, a small town on the south-eastern tip of Nova Scotia. There are no visible remains of this 17th-century French Regime fort, which was constructed during the 1620s on Fort Point, overlooking a small bay on the Atlantic coast. By 1629 Fort Saint Louis was the sole remaining French military post of significance in early Acadia. The English were unsuccessful in their attempts to capture the fort. The site’s landscape now consists of a small grassed area with an HSMBC cairn and plaque surrounded by trees and brush, bounded to the west and to the east by the shoreline’s high water mark. Official recognition refers to the cairn surrounded by a radius of 100m excluding the small lake to the north. Pictou County	Hector Exhibit Centre & Archives, McCulloch House Museum & Geneology Centre	Destination	The Hector Exhibit Centre, now known as the McCulloch House Museum & Genealogy Centre, was opened on July 21st, 1973 as a project by the Federal Government in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the landing of the Ship Hector. The Genealogy Centre hosts a broad range of temporary exhibits focusing on local history and culture during the summer months. It is also the location of the archival facility and research center. With a growing interest in the heritage of Pictou County, this abundance of archival material includes hundreds of personal and corporate documents as well as family histories, newspapers on microfilm, vital statistics and much more. These resources combined with an extensive local history library provide visitors, students and academics alike with the opportunity to deeply explore the heritage of Eastern Canada. The McCulloch House Museum presents the life, career, and contribution of Thomas McCulloch, minister, writer, scientist, and educational reformer. As well, to introduce the story of Scottish settlement in Pictou county and to interpret the significant contribution of the Scots.
