What is Sport Hub Nova Scotia?
Sport Hub Nova Scotia is a pilot project that supports collaboration amongst community sport organizations, municipal recreation departments, and sport stakeholders to enhance the quality of sport in our communities together.
Sport Hubs are collaborative approach to community sport delivery, focused on the access and retention of participants. Sport Hub provides a cooperative opportunity that reduces the time and maximizes resources required to plan, manage, and participate in quality community sport.
As part of the Hub initiative, this locally developed and constantly evolving site serves as a unique online tool for families. It provides a one-stop-shop approach that reduces the resources required to plan, enroll, and manage sports, while strengthening accessibility of opportunities through improved collaborative scheduling and newsletters, amongst many other shared initiatives that maximize the positive impact on athlete improvement and overall participation in sport.
As it continues to grow, the Sport Hub will then look to engage additional sport organizations, providers, stakeholders, and communities for further partnership opportunities. Long term planning includes a number of other collaborative actions to make sport better, together, in Nova Scotia. Stay tuned!
Can I watch a video on how to get started? How to set up an account and register?
Click play to watch the video below, or go to the link: https://youtu.be/Bp2a3V6JuZs
Where are the current Sport Hub Communities? And why is that?
Currently there are active Sport Hubs in Antigonish Town and County, as well as Truro-Colchester County. Initial work also is happening in few new communities across the province – keep watching for more Community Sport Hub development!
Because this is a new way of working, we're starting slow and learning as we go. As it continues to grow, there’s huge opportunities to share what works, and what doesn’t, with new partners, adding new ideas, new perspectives, and new people, continuously improving along the way!
Who delivers each sport?
Sport is directly delivered by our community sport organization partners – coaches from the track and field club deliver track, softball coaches deliver softball programs, municipal recreation partners run their own programming, and so on.
It's the same great organizations you are used to dealing with! Each sport remains their own individual organization, with their own board members, volunteers and leaders.
The Sport Hub simply provides an umbrella of overall support and structure to our partner organizations to work together in a variety of areas that increases the quality of sport for our community as a whole.
Who are the community sport partners?
Community sport partners are grassroots, community sport organizations, municipal recreation departments, and stakeholders that collaboratively work to make sport better, together.
Each community sport organization partner has people who represent their voice by being active and engaged around a shared table, supporting the direction of planning and decision making. Municipal Recreation Departments help support the execution of the shared planning, while Sport Nova Scotia assists through the gathering of partners, facilitation of planning, and resource development.
An organization or team I am interested in is not listed here, why is that?
Sport Hub is brand new and still in pilot phase, so not all organizations in the area are integrated yet. As we are developing all this locally, we've had to keep it manageable to grow sustainably.
Other groups have their own way of registering and like to keep it standardized year over year or are committed to other systems for various reasons, and some of these are partners at a different level, more for communications at this time.
Over time, new sport organizations will likely become available on Sport Hub, but until then, if there’s a group your child wants to play with that isn’t listed on Sport Hub, you’ll have to contact that team directly to sign up. If you'd like to see them join the Hub, let them know :)
How do I become a volunteer with one of our community sport organizations?
All of our partner community sport organizations are volunteer organizations with a variety of volunteer role opportunities on an ongoing basis. Roles such as board members, coaches, officials, social media managers, treasurers, bookkeepers, etc. are critical to the delivery of sport at the community level. We are currently in the process of building a Sport Hub Volunteer Registration Portal, stay tuned for more details on that coming soon!
Do you have computer skills? Accounting skills? Management experience? Think you could run a mean canteen? If you would like to get in touch with organizations, visit our contact page here and feel free to reach out to your community by sending an email. If you know which organization you'd like to work with, you can also get in touch with the organization of your choice by using the contact information on their details page.
If you have any general questions about this, feel free to send an email to support@playfinder.ca
What’s the purpose of having a Sport Hub account?
A Sport Hub account opens the door to access a variety of community sport participation opportunities in a one-stop-shop.
From being added to a community newsletter that promote the programs of all partners in advance of their programming, to the ability to register for multiple programs, for multiple organizations in minutes, a Sport Hub account gives you increased access to the opportunity to play!

Does it cost to have a Sport Hub account?
No way! This service is free and is made possible by generous support from:
- Municipal Units from each Hub Community
- Sport Nova Scotia
- The Province of Nova Scotia - Department of Communities, Culture, & Heritage
Each sport program will have varying costs depending on what they offer. You will be able to sign participants up for various activities with multiple organizations and easily keep track of the associated costs.
In short, the programs may have fees associated but being part of Sport Hub is free!
If you are interested in pursuing financial support to participate, check out Kidsport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart.
What does Sport Hub do with my data?
On the Sport Hub website we only ask information that is critical for use by the community organizations that we serve and that you associate with. Your privacy and security is our first priority.
We collect information from you and your family in two ways:
- Through your account and family member profiles you create to access the Sport Hub Community Registration System, and
- Through the “Additional Information Form” that is collected in hard copy to provide medical and other important personal details that help organizations provide a safe and enjoyable experience for participants.
The owner/caretaker of the online data is Sport Nova Scotia. This data is used:
- at the individual level to help your family register for programs – the information is shared only with the specific organizations you are signed up with, and
- at the group level, assessing all data in a broad, holistic way to monitor, evaluate, and enhance community sport and recreation.
The caretaker of the confidential medical form (“Additional Information Form for Participants”) you fill out and submit is the organization that you submit it to. The suggested Sport Hub protocol in regards to their management of this form is as follows:
- The organization is responsible to have a safety binder onsite with the coach/leader at all times.
- This binder includes 2 copies of the form and the coach/leader is responsible for safely managing your confidential information while in their possession.
- The binder will also include incident reporting forms which are to be filled out after every injury or incident to keep a record.
- The forms will be destroyed by the organization at the end of each season.
- The form will only be used to:
- Review in advance of participation (by organization admin and coaches/leaders) to determine if any additional supports need to be put in place or if there is any critical medical information a coach/leader must know (ex. Allergies).
- Find contact information or share with medical personnel in the case of an emergency (hence the “two-copy” policy – ex. if one form is taken by a paramedic, the organization has one form remaining.
We will also direct you to the Privacy Policy outlined on the Sport Nova Scotia Website for additional information. If you have any questions or concerns about your data storage or how it is used, please do not hesitate to email us at support@playfinder.ca
What are the typical "sport seasons" and when should I expect registrations to happen?
Generally, there are two main sport seasons. We run registration in the early Spring for Spring/Summer programs, and run registration again in the Fall for Fall/Winter programs.
However, there may be some activities available to be registered for on the Sport Hub site that have registrations at other times of the year. Some Summer sports, for example, have a registration earlier or later into the Spring than the first round. Some orgs do registration in the fall, some do it at the end of the year and start in the new year. There could also be "one-off" camps or activities that drop any time of year, so...
...be sure to keep an eye on the site and on your inbox for Newsletter updates!
Can I review the Terms & Conditions of the "PayToday" online payment?
Of course! The full Terms & Conditions for PayToday can be reviewed here anytime.
Can children play multiple sports?
Absolutely!
We strongly encourage this, especially at a young age. In order to make this easier to do, our partner organizations have worked together to coordinate recreational sport schedules together so there are fewer programming conflicts, especially for the young ones (focus on alignment for recreational U5-U12).
Although avoiding all conflicts is challenging and dependent on moving parts, partners are working hard to align schedules to encourage multisport participation. Look to see incremental improvements each season as we get better and better at this through continued collaboration and communication.
Cool eh?
Are there any resources/ideas for staying active at home?
